Cutting & Plaining

Planing is a common manufacturing process that involves pressing and rotating a workpiece against a fixed and stationary cutting tool. As the workpiece rotates, the cutting tool removes material from it. It's called “Plaining” because the cutting tool produces a plane on the surface of the workpiece.

Plaining & shaping

Woodworking involves perfect cuts and power tools. A good way to think of wood carving is in stages, or layers. You'll start with roughing out a very general shape, then progressively step through stages to refine the shape into something more detailed.
